Fwd: Save seals from Shell's oil drills

english mobile

From: Emily Fisher, Oceana <wavemaker@oceana.org>

Take Action to Protect the World's Oceans
Dear Anne,

Save seals from Shell's oil drills

Tell President Obama to keep oil drills out of seals' homes»
Two years ago oil spewed into the Gulf of Mexico, and today we are still discovering sick dolphins and damaged habitats. Seals in the Arctic could be next – unless you speak up to save them.
Drilling in the Arctic puts animals like seals at risk. If a seal has to swim through oil, its fur could lose its insulation causing it to freeze to death. Surfacing for air in icy waters clogged with oil could result in a lungful of toxic fumes instead. Seals are built to survive harsh weather and cold seas – but they're not built for oil.
But you can help save these seals. Tell President Obama to make the right decision and protect the Arctic»
Shell is sending ships to the Arctic right now to prepare for drilling this summer. We learned from the Gulf that we aren't prepared for an oil spill anywhere – and we're especially not prepared for one in the icy north. Shell says that they can contain a spill, but the technology simply isn't there.
The Gulf of Mexico spill took place in mild weather and had easy access to cleanup crews, and it still took months to contain. A similar spill in the Arctic would be an unimaginable disaster. Even a minor spill will cause injury and death to seals and whales.
Drilling in the Arctic just isn't safe. Shell can't contain an oil spill there – no one can. That's why we're asking you to call on President Obama to call off the drills. There's not much time left to stop Shell from setting up their drills and putting seals at risk.
Tell President Obama to turn back the drills before it's too late»
We're joining other groups in an effort to get one million people to ask Obama to protect the Arctic. Add your voice – together we can make ourselves heard.

Emily Fisher For the Arctic,
Emily Fisher
Oceana

Fwd: Mining in Wilderness Areas? Congress's Attacks Continue...

Anti-wildlife members of Congress want to undermine the Wilderness Act and other laws that protect our public lands.
Protect America's Public Lands - Take Action

Tell your U.S. Representative to stand up for wildlife and protected lands by opposing HR 4089.

A vote is expected as early as tomorrow, so please take action today.

Dear Wildlife Supporter,

They're among our country's most special places -- so special, that they've earned some of the strongest protections offered by the U.S. government.

But some in Congress want to overturn decades of protections for America's beloved Wilderness Areas -- and allow new mining, logging and other harmful practices to invade these special places.

Stop the latest attack on our wildlife and wild places: Urge your U.S. Representative to oppose HR 4089, a bill that would undermine vital protections for federally designated Wilderness Areas and other public lands.

A vote on this terrible bill is expected as early as tomorrow, so please take action today.

The bill before the U.S. House this week contains harmful provisions that would reduce or eliminate important protections for America's most precious public lands.

It would allow recreational off-road vehicles to invade federally designated wilderness areas -- something that has never been allowed before. It would also open the door to new logging, mining and extraction of fossil fuels in these special places.

Speak out now for our public lands. Urge your U.S. Representative to oppose HR 4089.

HR 4089 would also eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency's authority to regulate toxic lead in ammunition and fishing equipment. This dangerous neurotoxin can poison or kill eagles, bears and other wildlife that feed on prey tainted by lead fragments.

Urge your U.S. Representative to stand up for the health of our Wilderness Areas and other public lands. Take action today.

Thank you for all you do to protect our wildlife and wild places.

Mary Elizabeth Beetham, Defenders of Wildlife Sincerely,

Mary Beth Beetham
Director of Legislative Affairs

chimpanzeeAn Easy Way To Help Chimpanzees During WWAIL

Looking for a simple but powerful way to help chimpanzees in laboratories next week?
If you register an event with us during World Week for Animals in Laboratories (April 21-29), we can send you copies of our new info card in support of the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. The front of the card, pictured below, features a touching photo of two chimpanzees sharing a tender moment at IDA-Africa's Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center. The back of the card provides a powerful argument for releasing chimps from labs to sanctuaries and asks readers to support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act by contacting their elected officials through our website at: www.idausa.org/gapcsa.
chimpanzee card frontPlease join other activists next week in passing out these cards to people who care about primates at the opening weekend of Disney's new movie "Chimpanzee." Just look up showtimes at your local theater, schedule a time to pass out cards on the viewers' way in or out, and then contact us at wwail@idausa.org so we can register your event and send you copies of our brand new flier!

Sarah Louise after Hope Animal Sanctuary fixed her up!Only You Can Keep Hope Animal Sanctuary Alive

America's Deep South is one of the worst strongholds for animal cruelty and abuse in the United States. Mississippi, especially, is a hotbed for animal neglect, abuse and suffering, due to:
Grinding poverty - many families survive on less than $12,000 per year.
Complete lack of municipal resources - there are few shelters, and law enforcement officers have nowhere to turn but IDA's Hope Animal Sanctuary.
Agonizing abuse and heartbreaking neglect that dogs, cats, horses and other animals silently endure every day.
At IDA's Hope Animal Sanctuary, our phone rings day and night. And the person who usually answers that call is Doll Stanley, Director of Hope Animal Sanctuary, who has made Mississippi her home, her life's work, and her passion since 1993. Please click here to read a personal letter from Doll, including details about one of our most dramatic, uplifting recent rescues! You won't believe how Sarah Louise (pictured above left) looked when we first rescued her. Click here to donate to Hope Animal Sanctuary.

giraffeFlorida Victory: Environmentally Destructive Zoo Bill Vetoed

A coalition of 16 Florida zoos and aquariums tried to quietly pass a bill that would have allowed them to lease state-owned land to breed exotic species under the guise of "research." We asked our Florida members to send letters opposing the bill. We're pleased to report that Governor Rick Scott has vetoed it.
Critics of the bill, including environmental and wildlife activists, warned that zoos would use public lands needed for the conservation of native wildlife, interfere with restoration efforts, and prevent public use of recreational lands. In his veto letter, Gov. Scott stated that the authority sought in the bill already exists in current law, but he added: "I believe the bill lacks sufficient safeguards... to ensure the protection of state and district lands, native species and habitats."
The bill was pushed by Lowry Park Zoo vice president Larry Killmar, who had close ties with former zoo CEO Lex Salisbury, who was forced out of his position after a city audit found he took more than $200,000 in animals and equipment. According to the Tampa Tribune, Killmar "authorized many of the animal transactions" that sent 200 of the zoo's animals to Salisbury's planned wildlife park. The project may also have infringed on sensitive wildlife habitat. Thanks to IDA members in Florida who contacted their elected officials about this bill that was about profit, not conservation.
