Friend Will you let Congress sacrifice the natural treasures that are our children and grandchildren's birthright? Right now lawmakers are considering spending cuts that could devastate protections for animals like threatened and endangered sea turtles, polar bears and rare Sonoran pronghorn antelope.

Defenders of Wildlife is fighting back and we need your help. Please make a tax-deductible donation today to help our imperiled animals.

Dear
Wildlife Supporter,

The budget axe.

It's a deadly weapon in the wrong hands and could spell disaster for some of America's most treasured – and imperiled – wildlife and wild places.
Right now, Congress is considering slashing vital programs that protect sea turtles, polar bears and hundreds of other species.

Today, Defenders of Wildlife and our coalition partners are launching a brand-new campaign to protect these vital safeguards for our wildlife… and we need your support.

Help fund our emergency campaign to save wildlife threatened by budget cuts. Please make a tax-deductible donation today.

If you've never donated to Defenders of Wildlife, now is the time to support our work with an emergency donation.

A key committee in the House of Representatives has already approved cuts that would threaten the very survival of some of our most precious wildlife:

  • Sea Turtles. Lawmakers in the House have slashed funding for the Multinational Species Conservation Fund, denying threatened and endangered sea turtles vital habitat protections and inching these imperiled and ancient seafarers even closer to extinction.
  • Polar Bears. Congress is considering a 20% cut to programs that protect hundreds of threatened and endangered species – animals like America's threatened polar bears. Without help, these beloved bears could disappear from our country by 2050.
  • Wildlife Habitat. The House is considering significant cuts to the National Wildlife Refuge System – a move that would imperil threaten the survival of rare Sonoran pronghorns and hundreds of other species.
As a former head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, I know just how devastating these cuts would be. That's why Defenders of Wildlife has committed to an emergency campaign to stop these cuts. But we need your help.

Your donation today will help…

Run hard-hitting ads (like the one above) in National Journal Daily, one of the most widely read publications on Capitol Hill. Our first ad runs today, with two additional ads running tomorrow and Wednesday. These ads will cost thousands of dollars, but they'll ensure that lawmakers know just what's at stake when it comes to cutting wildlife-saving programs.

Bring wildlife experts from across the country to Washington to lobby Congress on the importance of protecting our imperiled species. Airfare isn't cheap, but we know that these expert voices can make a powerful difference in the fight to protect sea turtles, polar bears and hundreds of other species from the devastating budget cuts now being considered in Congress

And much more. Defenders of Wildlife's advocates on Capitol Hill are working tirelessly to protect wildlife-saving programs from the budget axe. Our media team is engaged in highly targeted and strategic outreach to news outlets in key Congressional districts. And our grassroots mobilization team is preparing a campaign to engage tens of thousands of activists in the next few days.

We need to raise at least $30,000 in the next 48 hours to support these emergency efforts. Please make a donation now.

The choice is clear: Protecting wildlife now will save us from more expensive efforts to rescue threatened and endangered species from extinction in the future.

We can win this fight, but we can't do it without you, friend. Please help support our wildlife-saving efforts with your donation.

With Gratitude,
Jamie Rappaport Clark, Defenders of Wildlife Jamie Rappaport Clark
President
Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. We don't have much time to raise the money we need to fund this fight. Please make a secure donation online now, so we can put your contribution to immediate use saving our wildlife. Or, call 1-800-385-9712 to make a donation by phone.

Save the Spirit Bear Coast

Don't let Big Oil decide the Spirit Bear's fate!
Spirit Bear

Plans for a tar sands oil pipeline and supertanker traffic could end in disaster for the land of the Spirit Bear. Help us protect the world's very last Spirit Bears while we still can. Make your voice heard today!

Take action

Dear Anne,

We need your immediate help to stop an energy giant from endangering the last 400 Spirit Bears with a spill of the world's dirtiest oil.

The Spirit Bear is one of North America's greatest wildlife treasures. Native only to the coastal rainforest of Canada's British Columbia, it is a race of black bears in which a recessive gene causes one out of ten cubs to be born all white.

But Big Oil has other plans for the land of the Spirit Bear. The Northern Gateway pipeline, proposed by energy giant Enbridge, would carry 500,000 barrels a day of the world's dirtiest oil from the Alberta tar sands directly through the bear's rainforest home.

Please send a message to Christy Clark, the Premier of British Columbia, demanding that her government actively oppose the Northern Gateway pipeline.

A serious pipeline break could happen at any time as a river of toxic oil is pumped from the Alberta tar sands across the spectacular mountains and rivers of British Columbia.

But it gets worse: When that oil reaches the Spirit Bear Coast, it will be loaded onto supertankers that will have to navigate treacherous reefs, hurricane-force winds and a channel six times narrower than the passage that sank the Exxon Valdez!

Those oil-laden tankers will need to pass Princess Royal Island, the last stronghold of the Spirit Bear, as they churn through wildlife-filled waters that are home to orcas, humpbacks, fin whales and Steller sea lions.

Can you imagine the sheer devastation a supertanker spill would wreak on this wildlife paradise?

No wonder the native people of more than 70 First Nations are united in total opposition to this pipeline and tanker fiasco that could wipe out their way of life forever.

Call on Premier Clark to stand with her province's First Nations in opposing the pipeline. And tell her that we will not sacrifice one of our continent's last great ecosystems, its thousand-year-old cultures and the few remaining Spirit Bears we have left for the sake of oil company profits.

The First Nations can't stave off Enbridge's destructive plan by themselves. They need our strong support.

A decade ago, NRDC stood with the First Nations and helped save the Spirit Bear's rainforest home from clear-cut logging. But with the land of the Spirit Bear now endangered by Big Oil, we must rise once again to its defense.

Please take a moment to help save the Spirit Bear Coast by sending your own message right now. Tomorrow may be too late.

Sincerely,
Frances

Act now to save sea turtles, polar bears and more

Don't Let the Budget Axe
Swing on Wildlife

Slashing wildlife protections could harm America's struggling polar bears.

Dear Wildlife Supporter,

Congress is preparing to sacrifice sea turtles, polar bears and hundreds of other struggling species -- all in the name of budget austerity.

They're swinging the budget axe directly at our national treasures.

Take action now -- tell Congress to stand up for wildlife and keep America's treasures off the chopping block.

Congress is now formulating a comprehensive spending bill for the federal government -- and it's not looking good for our wildlife.

  • The House of Representatives has slashed funding for the Multinational Species Conservation Fund, denying threatened and endangered sea turtles vital habitat protections and inching these ancient seafarers even closer to extinction.
  • Congress is considering a 20% cut to programs that protect hundreds of threatened and endangered species -- animals like America's threatened polar bears. Without help, these beloved bears could disappear from our country by 2050.
  • The House is considering significant cuts to the already underfunded National Wildlife Refuge System -- a move that would threaten the survival of rare Sonoran pronghorns and hundreds of other species.

We need to ensure that the budget axe doesn't swing on our nation's most vulnerable wildlife and wild places.

Tell Congress not to short change our wildlife. Tell your elected officials that any comprehensive federal spending bill should be free of anti-wildlife provisions.

Slashing vital programs that protect our wildlife and wild places is a terrible idea. These cuts will not only affect a sector of the economy that brings in $821 billion each year and employs hundreds of thousands of people, but they will also bring more drastic and expensive regulations in the future to save our precious resources.

Simply put: Investments in wildlife conservation are good for our economy and our natural heritage.

That's why we've launched an emergency campaign to stop these terrible cuts to wildlife conservation.

Please speak out now. Urge Congress to stand up for America's wildlife and wild places and keep conservation off the chopping block.

Wildlife Supporter, this week, we've started an all-out blitz to stop these dangerous attacks on our wildlife running ads on Capitol Hill, bringing wildlife experts to Congress to persuade against these harmful cuts, reaching out to news outlets in key Congressional districts across the nation and much, much more.

Now we need your voice to urge your elected officials to keep our natural treasures off the chopping block. Please take action now.

Thank you for all you do to protect our wildlife and wild places.

Urgent: Motivate Congress To Save $1 Billion By Helping Animals Now

In order to resolve our country's historic budget crisis, the U.S. Congress has created a 12-member "Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction" that is to create a plan by November 23 to reduce our nation's debt by $1.5 trillion over 10 years. There are many areas of spending on which the 6 Rabbits in labRepublicans and 6 Democrats will have difficulty agreeing. However, because so much wasteful spending also needlessly harms animals, this gives the animal protection community an enormous and extraordinary opportunity to suggest budget cuts that the committee can easily agree on!

The Humane Society Legislative Fund has suggested reforming four wasteful programs that together will save taxpayers more than $1 billion. In Defense of Animals (IDA) endorses this proposal, and we're asking our members to send a fax to the committee that points out to them these probably overlooked opportunities for savings. The fax will also automatically be sent to your own U.S. Senators and Representative.

The four money-saving reforms suggested are:

1.    End warehousing of chimpanzees in federally-funded laboratories – save $300 million!

2.    BLM photoEliminate the need to feed thousands of wild horses in government holding pens by using immunocontraception rather than round-ups and removals – save $172 million!

3.    Replace animal testing procedures with dramatically more efficient methods – save $500 million!

4.    Reduce government subsidies of inefficient and inhumane lethal predator control – save $110 million!

Please click here for more information on these proposals from the Humane Society Legislative Fund. Each member of the Congressional committee has already been provided with the details backing up each of these proposals. So all you need to do is send a fax indicating your support! And we've made it easy for you: click here to access our automated system where we've already set up a sample letter. Personalize the letter, feel free to add your own thoughts, then send it to all members of the committee, plus your own Senators and Representative, all with one click. Thank you!
