No final do dia, outro chamado.

english mobile

WELCOME

Dear Anne,

Can one person really make a difference? Gaylord Nelson never doubted it. 40 years ago he founded Earth Day, catapulting the environment onto the world stage and into the public consciousness.

I was privileged to know Gaylord in his role as Counselor to The Wilderness Society. He never stopped marveling at those who gathered on the first Earth Day to demand protections for our environment. Nelson knew that the power of one, multiplied many times over, is a force to reckon with.

Today the WildAlert community continues this legacy in ways unimaginable in 1970. Just last month we generated an incredible 148,479 letters to Congress opposing a proposed land exchange that could lead to more logging of ancient trees in America's Rainforest, Alaska's Tongass. Your voice is critical as we continue to put pressure on Congress.

Earth Day is April 22. Click here to learn more about Earth Day and activities at The Wilderness Society.

Thank you for all you do to help our efforts!

Best wishes,

Kathy Kilmer
The Wilderness Society

Take Action

Despite great progress since the first Earth Day 40 years ago, America continues to follow a failing energy policy that rewards polluters, undermines public health, threatens our national and economic security and keeps us dependent on foreign energy.

This month, Americans of all backgrounds are making Earth Day a time of progress by signing the Declaration of Energy Independence calling on the U.S. Senate to take swift action on clean energy and climate. Sign the petition today!

Inside Story

Roadless forests on the defense again

After surviving years of attacks from the Bush administration, a national roadless forest rule that protects 58 million acres of our nation's most pristine forests is once again under threat. The state of Colorado is attempting to exempt itself from the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, setting a dangerous precedent for other state exemptions. Such a move could open the nation's roadless forests to timber, mining and other industries. At stake are some of our most ecologically rich lands that serve as extremely high-quality havens for wildlife.

Your Reasons to Press Congress for a Clean Energy Bill

From utility bills to National Parks, there are a great number of reasons for pushing clean energy legislation forward. Join us each day as we count down to Earth Day, and learn a new daily fact on the importance of passing a clean energy bill this year. Learn more.

More Wilderness protections for Colorado?

The Wilderness Society joined local conservation groups in Colorado this week to present a proposal to Colorado's Congressional delegation to protect nearly 250,000 acres of spectacular land in the Rockies. Learn more.

Support Our Work

The future of America's Rainforest, the Tongass National Forest, is at risk. Congress is considering legislation that would transfer some of the most biologically productive lands, including vast swaths of old-growth trees, out of public ownership, to a for-profit, native corporation for logging and other private development.

The Wilderness Society is working at all levels to oppose this legislation and implement a sustainable future for the Tongass that protects this vital ecosystem and the wildlife that depends on it.

This bill could move at any time! Please, support our work to save America's Rainforest by donating today.

Animals need a chance to survive -- contact your Senators

english mobile

As you know, polar bears and other creatures are facing serious survival challenges. Because I know you are interested in helping to give these majestic animals a chance to survive, I wanted to share this message from our friends at the League of Conservation Voters about legislation in Congress that would support clean energy and address the dire effects of climate change.

Please take action today to urge your Senators to make climate change a priority.

Thanks for all you do for animals!

Sincerely,

mike_sig_blue.gif

Mike Markarian
President

Dear Anne,

The fate of the planet is at
stake.

The Senate is about to
resume debate on climate
legislation – but enemies of
the environment are
spending millions to
influence the vote.

Tell your Senators: vote
YES on comprehensive
clean energy and climate legislation.

Erratic weather conditions. Hurricanes. Melting ice caps. Habitats and ecosystems have been irreversibly and catastrophically altered -- scattering vulnerable communities and pushing endangered species to the edge of extinction. Climate change is already having a devastating impact around the globe.

The Senate is about to resume the debate on clean energy and climate change legislation that could literally determine the fate of our planet and the potential for a clean energy economy.

Will you contact your Senators today and urge them to support clean energy and climate legislation?

In June, the members of the House showed they were ready to seriously address climate change -- but it is far from a done deal. Our victory in the House has our opponents on the offensive, spending tens of millions to roadblock the Senate bill. We must not let dirty polluters get in the way of our clean energy future.

Click here to ask your Senators to vote YES for a clean energy economy and for the protection of endangered animals around the globe.

As you know, this is a critical moment in the fight to pass comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation in the Senate. Our margin of victory was extremely close in the House, and will come down to just a few votes in the Senate as well.

Corporate polluters are doing everything in their power to sabotage efforts to transition to a clean energy economy because they claim it threatens their bottom line. Last year, these polluters spent a record $154 million lobbying Congress. They’ve launched an unprecedented smear campaign to defeat comprehensive climate legislation and protect their profits.

This is why it is so critical that Senators hear from their constituents who support jump-starting a clean energy economy that cuts global warming pollution. Will you add your voice today?

Send a message right away to your Senators asking for their support of a comprehensive clean energy and climate bill.

We have come so far, and can’t let up now. Please, send a message to your Senators today.

Sincerely,
Gene Karpinski
President
League of Conservation Voters

Spay Day 2010Project Hope's Spay Days - Over 700 Mississippi Dogs Spayed Or Neutered!

IDA's Project Hope sanctuary in Mississippi held our March Spay Day in conjunction with Mississippi State University’s Mobile Spay Clinic.

The successful event provided surgery for Project Hope rescues and dogs in the care of the Bolivar Cleveland Animal Shelter (BCAS).

Thirty dogs were spayed or neutered that day, bringing our total to over 700. Click here to see more photos from our Spay Day, and to read about an exciting new $100,000 grant that is helping Project Hope serve so many more animals.

chimp Ron at CoulstonExpose Ridiculous Research! And Stop Chimpanzee Experiments Now!

IDA is gearing up for World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL), beginning April 17. This week, as part of a coalition, IDA sued the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their failure to act on a petition to dramatically reduce animal testing. Our Mandatory Alternatives Petition asked the FDA to require that animal tests not be used where validated non-animal alternatives exist.

Last week, in honor of April Fool's Day, IDA unveiled our “Top 10 Reasons Why Animal Research is a Cruel Joke.” These "studies" would be laughable if they weren't so tragic. The Top 10 List showed that even “cream of the scientific crop” experiments - funded by the NIH, approved by federally-mandated oversight committees, and published in peer-reviewed journals - added nothing to medical progress and told us nothing we didn't know already.

And we're asking all our friends to send a quick fax in support of historic legislation being considered in Congress. The Great Ape Protection Act, H.R. 1326, would ban all invasive research on great apes, and would grant all great apes "owned" by the government permanent retirement to sanctuaries.

Click here to learn more about each of these efforts, to send a fax to your representatives, and see how you can become involved with WWAIL.

Calico Wild Horse Update

IDA's lawsuit to stop the roundup of wild horses in the Calico Mountain Complex in northwest Nevada proceeds. Last week, our generous pro bono legal team at Buchanan, Ingersoll and Rooney in Washington DC filed the final brief in the case. We continue to highlight the illegality of the government's practice of removing wild horses from the wild only to stockpile them in government holding facilities in the midwest. Oral arguments in the case are scheduled for April 30 in Washington DC, and the court is expected to issue a ruling by the end of May.

The roundup of the Calico horses exemplifies what is wrong and illegal with the government's management of wild horses. Click here to read more.

Gray Whale, NOAABan On Commercial Whaling May Be Overturned! Act Today!

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) will vote in June on a deadly proposal to overturn the global ban on commercial whaling. Countries like Japan, Norway and Iceland, who ignored the moratorium in the first place, stand to directly benefit. The draft proposal, expected to be released officially on April 22, would overturn the global ban on commercial whaling and allow a great expansion of whale hunting, including in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary around Antarctica.

The countries responsible for drafting the proposal include Iceland, Japan, and the United States. Click here to learn more, and to send a fax to President Obama and your congressional Representative and Senators in 2 minutes or less.

EarthVegDay Resolution Passes In San Francisco Just In Time For Earth Day

On April 6, 2010, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution encouraging city residents to eat vegetarian on Mondays. IDA thanks the San Francisco board for taking this leadership role in promoting a more environmental, healthy and compassionate diet, while decreasing the suffering of animals.
