Demand Action to
Save Sea Turtles

The BP Oil disaster is far from finished. The Senate must act now to reform offshore drilling and protect wildlife.

Demand Senate Action for Wildlife - Take Action!

Use the information below to call your senators and demand action to address the Gulf oil disaster and prevent the next offshore tragedy:

  • your U.S. senators

Forward this message

Help spread the word. Forward this message to a friend.

Dear Wildlife Supporter,

A recent study suggests that nearly 80% of the oil released by the Deepwater Horizon offshore disaster remains. [1] That means that millions of barrels are still poisoning our sea turtles, fouling our coasts and threatening the survival of endangered marine life like sperm whales and bluefin tuna.

Solving just 20% of the problem isn't enough. Demand that your senators pass the Clean Energy Jobs and Oil Accountability Act (S. 3663), legislation to preserve vital habitat for sea turtles and other wildlife and improve oversight and accountability to prevent the next offshore oil disaster.

Just use the information below to contact your senators now:

  • your U.S. senators

If you do not see your senators information above, please call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to be connected with your senators' Washington, DC offices.

… and deliver this simple message:

My name is [Your First Name] Friend of Defenders, and I'm calling from  [Your City] to urge [your senators] to pass the Clean Energy Jobs and Oil Accountability Act (S. 3663) as soon as they return to Washington, DC in September.

While we don't yet know the full extent of the environmental and economic impacts of this spill, we have already seen the devastation it has caused to wildlife, fisheries and coastal economies.

If passed, the Senate bill would improve offshore drilling management and crisis response and finally guarantee funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund – an important tool for preserving and restoring habitat for Gulf wildlife and other animals. It would also invest in Home Star, an energy efficiency program that lowers consumers' energy costs and creates jobs.

Please let me know that you called. In the weeks ahead, we will be following up with your senators to ensure that they know how much you care about a more comprehensive response to the Gulf oil disaster.

While the oil has stopped gushing into the Gulf, we are far from "mission accomplished."

The House of Representatives has passed a bill to address much needed drilling reforms, and now it's time for the Senate to do the same.

The BP oil disaster has affected every Gulf state – and beyond. Fisheries have been devastated, tourism to the area has plummeted, wildlife refuges and marshes have been fouled with oil, toxic tar has washed onto beaches, and thousands of dolphins, sea turtles, herons, pelicans, and countless other bird and wildlife species were coated in oil, facing slow and agonizing deaths.

With hundreds of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars of economic activity dependent on clean coasts and healthy coastal waters, this spill has already resulted in damage for coastal areas dependent on tourism or fishing.

For example, in Alabama, rental reservations were canceled, and they saw a more than 50 percent reduction in tourists to the Gulf Coast area of Baldwin County. The loss of tourism trickles into the rest of the community. Without tourists, gas stations, restaurants, and shops also suffer. There have already been layoffs and businesses closed, and many local businesses (specifically fishing-related ones) are about to shut their doors.

Oil companies cannot promise that something like this disaster won't happen in the Gulf or other coastal areas, and there is simply too much danger to subject major fisheries and wildlife areas to continued offshore drilling without real reform.

Please call your senators today and take a stand for responsible action to address the Gulf oil disaster… and help prevent the next offshore environmental catastrophe!

For the Wild Ones,

Marcia Lesky

P.S. With your senators back in their home states, now is a great time to make your voice heard. Please call their home offices now, and make sure that you let us know that you took action.

Scotlund and dog rescued from Hurricane KatrinaRemembering Hurricane Katrina, Five Years Later

Scotlund Haisley led one of the first animal rescue teams to hit the ground after Hurricane Katrina. His team spent six weeks in New Orleans and rescued nearly 1,000 animals. Read his account of those days in New Orleans, a chilling but inspiring story of what it means to be a first responder.

IDA played a crucial role in the post-Katrina response efforts. We delivered supplies to Gulf Coast emergency shelters and transported hundreds of displaced animals to shelters. Today IDA’s rescue team is ready to save animals from both man-made and natural catastrophes. Click to read more.

Queenie and Lucky at San Antonio ZooUpdate On Elephants Queenie And Lucky

During our three year campaign to free Queenie (now called "Boo") from a lifetime of abuse in the circus industry, IDA urged that she go to a sanctuary where she could get the special rehabilitative care she needs. Instead, the USDA showed itself to be enmeshed with the zoo industry by acting as its acquisition arm rather than its regulator, sending Queenie to a tiny, antiquated exhibit at the San Antonio Zoo where she joined the misnamed "Lucky" in a space too small for even one elephant.

Our goal now is to hold the USDA responsible for orchestrating Queenie's move to the zoo, to ensure that the next elephant in need of rescue has her/his special needs prioritized in the placement decision. We will also continue our efforts to win Queenie and Lucky's liberation from their grossly inadequate cell. We still want them sent to a sanctuary where they could have what elephants so badly need: room to roam in a natural setting and the choice of companions.

The San Antonio Zoo's web page "Boo's Weekly Updates" has not been updated since July 19, three months after Queenie/Boo's arrival at the zoo, when the zoo claimed they were just beginning to spend substantial time together. IDA is monitoring these two elephants, both of whom have histories of social problems with other elephants. We continue to work to improve Queenie and Lucky's plight, and to make sure that other needy elephants' lives will be improved by the USDA, whose job it is to oversee their welfare.

Geese_Canadian_jpgGeese Returning To Prospect Park Shows Slaughter Failed

In the 50 days since New York City captured and killed an entire population of Canada geese in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, at least 107 new geese have taken their place. Less than two months after the massive slaughter, nearly one-quarter of the original flock has been replaced. “This proves the utter folly and needless cruelty of the July 8 extermination,” said City Council Member Letitia James, representing the city’s 35th district near Prospect Park. egg laying hensEgg Recall - IDA Urges Consumers To Stop Eating Sick Birds And Eggs

The recent massive egg recall comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen the unimaginably filthy living conditions that hens in intensive agriculture are forced to endure. With tens of thousands of laying hens crammed into tiny cages, contamination is unavoidable. It only makes sense that these eggs would likely infect anyone who eats them. If the suffering of billions of animals each year isn’t enough to make people rethink their diet, maybe this alarming outbreak will sway people to stop consuming animal products. Click here to join the conversation on our blog. IDA's news release on the egg recall, urging consumers to stop eating sick birds and eggs and just go vegan, was covered by Fox News.

CowCelebrate Compassion During World Go Vegan Week - October 24 - 31

The fifth annual World Go Vegan Week will be a celebration of compassion and a time to take action for animals, the environment, and everyone’s well-being. With the media buzzing about the egg recall, now is the perfect time to present the safe and humane alternative- go vegan!

The United Nations and the World Health Organization recently released reports articulating the detrimental effects of animal agriculture and encouraging a global shift to a plant-based diet. These astonishing reports convey the enormous waste of land, water, fossil fuels, and other resources for intensive animal food production, and they indicate that a diet including animal products has bad health and environmental repercussions, including global warming. Click here to learn more about eco-eating.

IDA encourages organizations and individuals to educate their communities about the vegan lifestyle as a compassionate, sustainable, and healthy way of eating and living. Check out our WGVW website to see a list of possible activities, and feel free to suggest others! IDA can send you educational materials and posters to make your event a success. Please register your event with Hope Bohanec: hope@idausa.org, (415) 448-0058.

The millions of farmed animals suffering around the world are counting on you to educate our global community about the benefits of a plant-based diet. Visit www.worldgoveganweek.org to find out how to get involved.
