BOLETIM DO DIA 14/08/10

Queridos amigos
Ducks in foie gras farmVictory - Avalon Hotel In Beverly Hills Removing Foie Gras From Menu

IDA congratulates the luxurious Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills for their compassionate decision to remove foie gras from their menu. The Avalon Hotel joins Spago as the second Beverly Hills establishment to remove foie gras.

Executive Chef Mirko Paderno and Avalon Hotel Food and Beverage Director Peter Carrillo made the decision to remove foie gras following discussions with IDA, and faxed a pledge to IDA on August 3.

“Foie gras production universally ranks as one of the cruelest forms of animal agriculture,” said Hope Bohanec, IDA Grassroots Campaigns Director. “We thank the Avalon Hotel for joining the ranks of world-renowned chefs like Wolfgang Puck in denouncing foie gras and refusing to serve cruelty.” Click here to read more and join the discussion.

Actress Elaine Hendrix at New York Rally for GeeseBreaking News - 150 People Speak Up For Geese Today At New York City Hall Rally

"If the USDA considers Canada geese a nuisance, well, USDA, let me introduce you to your new nuisance!" So said IDA President Scotlund Haisley, at a huge New York City Hall rally today - so huge that Mayor Bloomberg refused to even get out of his car!

New York City Council member Letitia James added: "When I grew up in Prospect Park, the geese were my friends. When I was an ugly duckling, the geese were there for me. Now this administration wants to exterminate my friends." Bravo, Council Member James! IDA's Barbara Stagno said "Today’s outpouring of concerned citizens demonstrates the outrage people have over the government's decision to slaughter geese in Prospect Park." Click here to express your opinion to New York's Mayor Bloomberg and the City Council, then click here to send an e-mail to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. Next week we'll have more photos and video on this story.

BLM photoOppose Massive Roundup Of Nearly 1,600 Wild Horses In Wyoming's Red Desert

Last week, at least 54 members of Congress wrote to the Interior Department demanding a halt to the wild horse roundups. This important action would not have happened without your voice opposing each of these unnecessary roundups. While the BLM is moving forward with its wild horse roundup schedule, despite overwhelming public and Congressional opposition, we must keep up the pressure.

In October, the BLM plans to remove nearly 1,600 wild horses - 80 percent of the estimated mustang population living in the Adobe Town and Salt Wells Creek Herd Management Areas in the pristine Red Desert region of Wyoming. This is another unnecessary roundup to cater to the private livestock industry, which uses the same lands for cheap grazing. Click here to take action to oppose this roundup.

IDA has offered a reward of $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the decapitation of three goats, whose mutilated bodies were left on display at the entrance to Alum Rock Park in San Jose, California. The case has caused widespread disgust, outrage, and fear in the surrounding neighborhoods.

An investigation by San Jose Animal Control is underway in order to find those responsible for this heinous act, and to determine the circumstances of the animals’ deaths. The SF Weekly reports that chicken feathers were found near the bodies, leading the investigators to question whether the practice of Santeria is involved. Click here to read more.

Kristy Lee Cook, hunterThanks For Voting In Last Week's New York Daily News Poll About American Idol's Kristy Lee Cook

Last week we told you about former American Idol finalist Kristy Lee Cook, who has a new hunting show on Versus, one of those seldom-watched "we like to kill animals" cable networks. The New York Daily News covered our opposition, and published a poll asking readers "Do you think Kristy Lee Cook is wrong to hunt on her new reality show?" Thanks to you, and thousands of compassionate New Yorkers, the animals won by a landslide! The final tally was 85 to 15 percent saying "yes, Ms. Cook is wrong." Thank you for standing up for animals!
