Mr. Falk generously donated his time to help animals by supporting IDA's Guardian Campaign, appearing in one of IDA's public service announcements (PSA). The Guardian Campaign is IDA's effort to convince people that the word "guardian" is a more appropriate word than "owner" to describe our relationship with animals. In IDA's 30-second "Be A Guardian: Adopt and Save A Life" PSA , Peter Falk and his wife Shera Danese appear with world-renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, and actors Wendie Malick and Kristen Bell. They urge people to save animals by adopting from shelters, and to always act as guardians of animals, not owners. Peter Falk and his late wife were passionate about rescuing dogs and lived with dogs adopted from shelters. "Peter Falk's profound compassion toward people as well as animal companions will be sorely missed," says veterinarian Elliot M. Katz, founder and president of In Defense of Animals. This raid resulted in sixteen felony counts of animal cruelty. The MAS Administrator, the MAS shelter vet and the MAS Kennel Manager were indicted and their employment with the City of Memphis terminated. Mayor A.C. Wharton conducted a nationwide search and hired a new Administrator of MAS in 2010. We are concerned about reports that things have gotten worse, not better. Scott Jurek, 37, is an ultra marathoner. What make it "ultra"? Well, the races he has been winning make a regular marathon of just over 26 miles look like an easy jog. Twice, Jurek has won the 153 mile Badwater Race in Death Valley (the place were they warn tourists not to hike from May to September) and has won the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run seven times. He once ran 165.7 miles in one day, making him the U.S.record holder for a 24 hour run. Oh, and by the way, he is vegan! Jurek has been racing since 1994. He went vegan in 1999 and that's when he started to win. He cites his vegan diet as the reason for his incredible health and recovery in training. Jurek felt that it was important as an athlete and an environmentalist that he take his diet all the way to vegan. He said, "it's been a big reason why I've been so consistent with races and pumping out serious results." Even the American Dietetic Association encourages athletes to increase their vegetable and fruit intake and admits that no steak is required to build muscle. "The [vegan] diet has encouraged me to prepare meals, which I enjoy," said Jurek. "I think that's one of the benefits of a plant-based diet, it encourages you to make your own food, and you're much more involved in the process. As an athlete, I want to know exactly what I'm putting into my body." Look for Scott Jurek's new book Eat and Run in spring 2012. | | Visit IDA's Booth At The AARP Expo IDA will once again be exhibiting at AARP's National Event & Expo "Life@50+," September 22-24, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
