FW: (Watch) Your Donation Helps Grizzlies Fly - to Freedom

Subject: FW: (Watch) Your Donation Helps Grizzlies Fly - to Freedom

I couldn't wait to share this video with you - since you helped make it happen!

Dear Anne,

I just sent this update to supporters who donated to help move four young grizzlies to a new home in the wild, and I wanted to send it along to you as well as the video is just too good not to share.

If you'd like to help IFAW give animals like these bears a second chance, please donate today. You can truly make a lifesaving difference for animals in need.

Thank you,
Fred

Bears; International Fund for Animal Welfare

Dear Friend,

I couldn't wait to share this video with you - since you helped make it happen!

It shows the four grizzlies you just helped us release back to the wild. Wait until you see them flying over the beautiful British Columbia landscape that is now their new home - amazing!

Bear cub release video

The Difference You Make

This release could not have happened without the help of generous IFAW supporters like you. You are truly making a lifesaving difference for animals in need.

Thank you so much for helping these four bears and for being a part of this groundbreaking Grizzly Rehabilitation and Release project.

As with many IFAW projects, our goals in this project are two-fold:

  1. The immediate, hands-on care of animals in crisis. These four healthy bears are now roaming a grizzly's dream habitat - a vast, grizzly-protected forest with plentiful food sources.
  2. Making a long-term, positive impact for animals. This release is the third for this pilot project, a cooperative partnership between IFAW, the Northern Lights Wildlife Sanctuary, and the British Columbia Ministry of Environment to study whether or not grizzly cub rehabilitation and release is viable.

These newly released bears are wearing special collars to track their movements (the collars fall off after a while), so we'll be able to learn a lot about where they're going and what they might be doing.

I hope you enjoy the video and the accompanying blog post from IFAW's Michael Booth.

And thanks again for helping with this exciting project.

Gratefully,

Fred O'Regan Signature

Worried about Donating online?
I used to be too ... so I made sure our online system is safe, secure, and state-of-the-art. It also eliminates check-processing costs, so more money goes directly to saving animals. But if you prefer to donate by phone or mail, simply click here for address information.

Peter Falk and dogFarewell To Peter Falk, A Great Friend To Animals

In Defense of Animals sadly says farewell to legendary actor Peter Falk, who passed away this week. Mr. Falk generously donated his time to help animals by supporting IDA's Guardian Campaign, appearing in one of IDA's public service announcements (PSA). The Guardian Campaign is IDA's effort to convince people that the word "guardian" is a more appropriate word than "owner" to describe our relationship with animals.

In IDA's 30-second  "Be A Guardian: Adopt and Save A Life" PSA , Peter Falk and his wife Shera Danese appear with world-renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, and actors Wendie Malick and Kristen Bell. They urge people to save animals by adopting from shelters, and to always act as guardians of animals, not owners.

Peter Falk and his late wife were passionate about rescuing dogs and lived with dogs adopted from shelters. "Peter Falk's profound compassion toward people as well as animal companions will be sorely missed," says veterinarian Elliot M. Katz, founder and president of In Defense of Animals. Click here for more information about IDA's Guardian Campaign that Peter Falk supported.

shelter dogPlease Help Improve Memphis, Tennessee Animal Services

In October 2009, Memphis Animal Services (MAS) was raided by the Sheriff, the Attorney General, and the ASPCA. This raid resulted in sixteen felony counts of animal cruelty. The MAS Administrator, the MAS shelter vet and the MAS Kennel Manager were indicted and their employment with the City of Memphis terminated. Mayor A.C. Wharton conducted a nationwide search and hired a new Administrator of MAS in 2010.

We are concerned about reports that things have gotten worse, not better. Please click here to read more, and then send an e-mail to the Tennessee Governor and Memphis city officials.

Vegan runner Scott JurekWant To Build Muscle And Win Marathons? Go Vegan!

Scott Jurek, 37, is an ultra marathoner. What make it "ultra"? Well, the races he has been winning make a regular marathon of just over 26 miles look like an easy jog. Twice, Jurek has won the 153 mile Badwater Race in Death Valley (the place were they warn tourists not to hike from May to September) and has won the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run seven times. He once ran 165.7 miles in one day, making him the U.S.record holder for a 24 hour run. Oh, and by the way, he is vegan!

Jurek has been racing since 1994. He went vegan in 1999 and that's when he started to win. He cites his vegan diet as the reason for his incredible health and recovery in training. Jurek felt that it was important as an athlete and an environmentalist that he take his diet all the way to vegan. He said, "it's been a big reason why I've been so consistent with races and pumping out serious results." Even the American Dietetic Association encourages athletes to increase their vegetable and fruit intake and admits that no steak is required to build muscle.

"The [vegan] diet has encouraged me to prepare meals, which I enjoy," said Jurek. "I think that's one of the benefits of a plant-based diet, it encourages you to make your own food, and you're much more involved in the process. As an athlete, I want to know exactly what I'm putting into my body." Look for Scott Jurek's new book Eat and Run in spring 2012.
