Play now! | | | | WELCOME Dear WildAlert subscriber, You'd think that the appalling mess in the Gulf of Mexico would shame the oil industry into at least a semblance of corporate responsibility. But that simply is not the case. If anything, the industry is more eager than ever to shake off regulations and get access to our public lands for drilling. Opening new areas of our coastlines, lands and waters to leasing and drilling won't lower energy prices. It will only add to the vast acreage of our American lands that are under the control of the oil and gas industry. That's why The Wilderness Society is continuing its efforts to reform the way oil and gas is developed on public lands, and help jump start renewable energy development. In May we scored a major win when the Obama Administration instituted sweeping reforms to oil and gas leasing on public lands. The bad news is the oil industry is now using the Gulf oil spill as a pretext for opening more onshore lands to drilling, including Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. You can help stop them and ensure that this crown jewel of our refuge system remains forever wild by taking action today. As always, thank you for your support. Sincerely, Kathy Kilmer The Wilderness Society Take Action Even as oil continues to despoil the Gulf Coast, oil companies are clamoring for more places to drill. They already have millions of acres of public lands under their control, and more lands than they can possibly drill. And now Big Oil's buddies in Washington are using the Gulf spill as a pretext for moving drilling into Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Drilling in this fragile land would be a mistake. Help us call on Congress to pass legislation that will keep the Arctic Refuge forever wild. Inside Story Less Logging for Alaska's Ancient Tongass Trees, but Threats Remain After years of policies focused on heavy exploitation of the Tongass National Forest, the Forest Service has announced plans to begin moving logging away from ancient old-growth areas and into second-growth stands that have already been impacted by past logging. The Wilderness Society has been a part of creating this vision. We celebrate the huge step forward, but before resting, we also must defeat a dangerous piece of legislation that would give some of the most biologically-rich acreage of this ancient rainforest to the Sealaska Corporation, which has historically clear-cut Tongass lands for timber export. Our Alaska forest program manager shares her thoughts about the Forest Service's new management vision here. In the News How to Make Hiking with Kids More Enjoyable Part of preserving wilderness for future generations is teaching youth to appreciate nature. We challenge you to get the kids in your life out on the trail this summer. Read our tips for hiking with kids. Victory! Arctic Drilling Postponed The WildAlert community had a big part in getting the Obama Administration to postpone Shell's risky plan to drill in Alaska's ecologically fragile Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. Read about it here. Support Our Work Even as the Gulf oil spill continues to devastate our lands and waters, the oil industry and its allies are using the catastrophe to push for even more access to America's public lands. Sarah Palin's solution is to "drill baby drill" in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, but drilling can be extremely damaging to onshore habitats, too. The fact is there are millions of untapped acres onshore and offshore already open to drilling. We DO NOT need to sacrifice more of America's treasures for oil. Help keep Sarah Palin and her oil industry friends out of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by making a donation today. Words to Inspire "In Wilderness is the preservation of the world."

With his first post on our blog, we proudly introduce IDA's new President, Scotlund Haisley. Click here to read Scotlund's inspiring vision for IDA. Here's an excerpt: "More than two decades ago I realized the common thread in the network of animal cruelty – the cage. The cage represents the imprisonment and mistreatment of the animals of this world. I have focused my career on tearing down these cages in their many forms and uses." Please read the full blog post, summarizing the victories we expect to achieve together in coming years. | | Victory! No $15 Million Expansion For Northwest Primate Centers! The National Center for Research Resources – the NIH center that funds research infrastructure projects – has denied $15 million in grant applications from both the Oregon and Washington primate centers! The Washington expansion grant would have built a BioSafety Level-3 facility where primates would be exposed to deadly, infectious diseases, while the Oregon expansion grant would have allowed more monkeys to be bred and supplied to other research labs, effectively turning the primate center into a monkey factory farm. To everyone who contacted NCRR or came out to protest these projects – thank you! IDA's NW Director Matt Rossell was interviewed. He described this misguided government plan which scapegoats sea lions instead of addressing the real, human-based issues that put salmon on the endangered species list: dams, overfishing, habitat destruction, and the introduction of non-native fish for sport fishing. Matt explained IDA's efforts with the grassroots Sea Lion Defense Brigade to stop this outrageous killing of native wildlife. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has acknowledged that the BLM’s cycle of rounding up, removing and warehousing wild horses is unsustainable and costing American taxpayers tens of millions of dollars annually. Secretary Salazar talks about change, but his actions carry out the same broken cycle of subjecting wild horses to horrific helicopter stampedes, destroying horses’ strong family bonds and relegating once free and majestic wild horses to zoo-like conditions in government holding facilities. The BLM now proposes to roundup and remove approximately 200 wild horses in the Reveille Herd Management Area in Nevada.
