chimpanzeeAn Easy Way To Help Chimpanzees During WWAIL

Looking for a simple but powerful way to help chimpanzees in laboratories next week?
If you register an event with us during World Week for Animals in Laboratories (April 21-29), we can send you copies of our new info card in support of the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act. The front of the card, pictured below, features a touching photo of two chimpanzees sharing a tender moment at IDA-Africa's Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center. The back of the card provides a powerful argument for releasing chimps from labs to sanctuaries and asks readers to support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act by contacting their elected officials through our website at:
chimpanzee card frontPlease join other activists next week in passing out these cards to people who care about primates at the opening weekend of Disney's new movie "Chimpanzee." Just look up showtimes at your local theater, schedule a time to pass out cards on the viewers' way in or out, and then contact us at so we can register your event and send you copies of our brand new flier!

Sarah Louise after Hope Animal Sanctuary fixed her up!Only You Can Keep Hope Animal Sanctuary Alive

America's Deep South is one of the worst strongholds for animal cruelty and abuse in the United States. Mississippi, especially, is a hotbed for animal neglect, abuse and suffering, due to:
Grinding poverty - many families survive on less than $12,000 per year.
Complete lack of municipal resources - there are few shelters, and law enforcement officers have nowhere to turn but IDA's Hope Animal Sanctuary.
Agonizing abuse and heartbreaking neglect that dogs, cats, horses and other animals silently endure every day.
At IDA's Hope Animal Sanctuary, our phone rings day and night. And the person who usually answers that call is Doll Stanley, Director of Hope Animal Sanctuary, who has made Mississippi her home, her life's work, and her passion since 1993. Please click here to read a personal letter from Doll, including details about one of our most dramatic, uplifting recent rescues! You won't believe how Sarah Louise (pictured above left) looked when we first rescued her. Click here to donate to Hope Animal Sanctuary.

giraffeFlorida Victory: Environmentally Destructive Zoo Bill Vetoed

A coalition of 16 Florida zoos and aquariums tried to quietly pass a bill that would have allowed them to lease state-owned land to breed exotic species under the guise of "research." We asked our Florida members to send letters opposing the bill. We're pleased to report that Governor Rick Scott has vetoed it.
Critics of the bill, including environmental and wildlife activists, warned that zoos would use public lands needed for the conservation of native wildlife, interfere with restoration efforts, and prevent public use of recreational lands. In his veto letter, Gov. Scott stated that the authority sought in the bill already exists in current law, but he added: "I believe the bill lacks sufficient safeguards... to ensure the protection of state and district lands, native species and habitats."
The bill was pushed by Lowry Park Zoo vice president Larry Killmar, who had close ties with former zoo CEO Lex Salisbury, who was forced out of his position after a city audit found he took more than $200,000 in animals and equipment. According to the Tampa Tribune, Killmar "authorized many of the animal transactions" that sent 200 of the zoo's animals to Salisbury's planned wildlife park. The project may also have infringed on sensitive wildlife habitat. Thanks to IDA members in Florida who contacted their elected officials about this bill that was about profit, not conservation.
