Largest Cat Rescue in HSUS History

Dear Anne,

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, our Animal Rescue Team responded to what is now the largest cat rescue in the history of The Humane Society of the United States.

See the heart-wrenching video, then please make an emergency gift to help us continue to save animals in distress»

I'm relieved to hear that 697 cats and one rooster are now safe, thanks to the efforts of our Animal Rescue Team and many other groups. But it hurts to know of the appalling conditions these animals endured for so long.

It's the generosity of supporters like you that enables us to answer the call during times of cruelty and disaster. Watch our touching video from the rescue, then please donate whatever you can afford to help ensure more animals can be saved. Thanks for all you do.

                                                Exmo. Senhor

Jorja FoxCSI's Jorja Fox Endorses IDA's International Day Of Action For Elephants In Zoos - This Saturday!

Saturday June 11, activists in at least 27 cities in five countries will come together for the third annual International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos (IDAEZ), with outreach events and demos to send the message that it’s wrong to keep elephants in small zoo displays where these magnificent animals suffer and die prematurely.

IDA is delighted to announce that CSI’s Jorja Fox has joined the legendary Lily Tomlin and stage and film actor Mariana Tosca in endorsing IDAEZ. In addition to being a great actor, Jorja is a dedicated advocate for animals who offers these inspiring words:

“We need to put the focus where it belongs – on protecting elephants in their natural habitats – and stop wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on artificial zoo displays that will never meet their needs. Instead of cruel confinement and domination, let's offer sanctuary, peace, compassion and hope. It's up to each and every one of us to take a stand for the elephants now in order to ensure their welfare in captivity and their continued existence on this planet.”

This year IDA is also offering a surprise action that everyone can participate in to help the elephants – but you’ll have to keep checking IDA’s Elephant Blog for more information. You don’t want to miss this special day of action, when advocates around the world will unite to end the suffering of elephants in zoos. Click here for a list of scheduled events. For more information, visit our IDAEZ page or email IDAEZ@idausa.org.

BLM photoAP Story Spotlights IDA's Fight For Wild Horses

MyPlate government food guide replaces Food PyramidUSDA And Surgeon General Replace "Food Pyramid" With Veg-friendly "MyPlate"

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Surgeon General unveiled a new food guide, MyPlate, that will replace the Food Pyramid, the standard nutrition guide since 1992. First Lady Michelle Obama, a champion of healthy eating, spoke at the Agriculture Department in Washington DC to introduce the new, more visual guide.

The innovative plate shows four portions with vegetables and grains by far the largest, and fruit and "protein" making up the smaller sections. And while the actual food is listed for vegetables, fruits, and grains, the fourth section, "protein," is not listed as "meat" or "meat/beans" - just "protein." It is clear that they are specifically recommending eating vegetables, grains, and fruits, but how you get your protein is your own choice. The message is that meat is no longer recommended or required in the diet. The only disappointment with the new guide is the separate small circle representing a glass of dairy. Dairy is completely unnecessary in the diet and is actually harmful. But, overall, this is a true turning point in mainstream nutrition education. This is practically a vegan plate! Dear Animal Advocates,

"Soring" is the act of applying harsh chemicals and other pain-causing agents to the legs and hooves of exhibition horses in order to produce a showy, high-stepping walk. Soring is illegal nationwide---but like animal fighting and many other forms of extreme animal cruelty, it continues to be practiced by those who seek to profit from animal abuse.

The ASPCA wants to see this cruel and frivolous practice completely eradicated. Along with several other animal welfare groups and former U.S. Senator Joseph Tydings, we have filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) seeking new horse-protection regulations as well as stronger enforcement of the Horse Protection Act, a federal law passed more than 40 years ago.

The USDA is requesting public comments on whether these changes should be made. Your voice in support of these humane advances can make all the difference for our nation's horses!

What You Can Do
Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center online right now to learn more and to register your comment with the USDA.

Unfortunately, we don't have much time: All comments are due by Monday, but the government's comment website will be down over the weekend. This means that you must submit your comments by midnight EDT this Friday, June 10.

Thank you for standing up for horses!
