Dear Animal Advocates, "Soring" is the act of applying harsh chemicals and other pain-causing agents to the legs and hooves of exhibition horses in order to produce a showy, high-stepping walk. Soring is illegal nationwide---but like animal fighting and many other forms of extreme animal cruelty, it continues to be practiced by those who seek to profit from animal abuse. The ASPCA wants to see this cruel and frivolous practice completely eradicated. Along with several other animal welfare groups and former U.S. Senator Joseph Tydings, we have filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) seeking new horse-protection regulations as well as stronger enforcement of the Horse Protection Act, a federal law passed more than 40 years ago. The USDA is requesting public comments on whether these changes should be made. Your voice in support of these humane advances can make all the difference for our nation's horses! What You Can Do Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center online right now to learn more and to register your comment with the USDA. Unfortunately, we don't have much time: All comments are due by Monday, but the government's comment website will be down over the weekend. This means that you must submit your comments by midnight EDT this Friday, June 10. Thank you for standing up for horses! |
