Amboseli elephantsNational Geographic - Joy For Orphan Elephants

The September issue of National Geographic magazine features a wonderful article on the work of Daphne Sheldrick, who runs a renowned elephant orphanage in Kenya. Click here to read an excerpt from this inspiring and informative article and to learn how you can support IDA’s efforts to help elephants in the wild through our Elephant Protection Fund.

chickenBig Victory For Chickens In Richmond, California

On September 27, the Richmond, California City Council voted to end live bird sales at its farmers’ market, effective November 1. In Defense of Animals partnered with LGBT Compassion to organize weekly protests, petitions, action alerts and other pressure to convince the city to end the cruel practice of selling live chickens at the Richmond Farmers’ Market.

The Richmond mayor received over 1,000 e-mails from local IDA supporters, and she acknowledged these e-mails at the meeting. Nineteen passionate animal advocates spoke in support of the ban and only two people spoke in opposition. Our efforts paid off with a 4–2 vote, with the mayor voting for the ban! feral catIDA Volunteers Helping Feral Cats

IDA often helps feed, foster, and find homes for homeless cats. We are currently working with some wonderful volunteers to trap and neuter a colony of feral cats outside a large chain store in Portland, Oregon. A mother and her four kittens were recently removed from their nest in the store's pallet yard - where they were in constant danger from coyotes and delivery trucks - and re-homed indoors thanks to IDA members. However, there are more homeless cats in the area and we need help covering the cost of food, supplies, and vet bills.

The rainy season is starting: we would like to build covered feeding stations so that the dry food stays dry, and winter shelters so the cats do not freeze to death. Please make a tax-deductible donation to our Feral Cat Fund to help us save these cats.

BullfightAnother Victory - Bullfights Banned In Catalonia, Spain!

Bulls, and people who defend them, are celebrating the banning of bullfighting in Spain’s Catalonia region. The last bullfight in the area took place in Barcelona on September 25, ending a bloody and brutal spectacle for Spain’s Northeastern region. After many years of protest and conflict between animal advocates and bullfight supporters, the Catalonia parliament's July 2010 vote to ban bullfights took effect this week.

Bullfights are not fights at all. They are the torture and killing of a wounded, frightened, and psychologically tormented animal. Those who are so inclined can search for bullfight videos on the internet to see for yourself, but we don't recommend it.

The Canary Islands banned bullfighting in 1991. IDA congratulates Catalonia on its compassionate new law and we hope that the rest of Spain, neighboring Portugal, Mexico and France will follow suit.

St. Francis of AssisiHappy Birthday St. Francis of Assisi, September 26, 1881

"Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission ― to be of service to them wherever they require it."

St. Francis of Assisi was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He was one of the most recognized religious figures in history. Saint Francis' love of animals is legendary, and indeed, many legends tell of his ability to communicate with wild animals to the benefit of both the animals and the people they came in contact with. St. Francis felt that humans were the stewards of nature and one more group of "creatures," just like all the other animals. One legend says that a donkey who knew him wept at his death.
