GuZoo bengal tigerPlease Help Shut Down Notorious "GuZoo Animal Farm" In Canada

The controversial GuZoo Animal Farm in Alberta, Canada, has long been a source of great concern because of terrible conditions, including small filthy cages and failure to provide even basic care, for animals such as primates, big cats, small mammals, birds and reptiles. Now we have the chance to shut down this nightmare zoo and ensure that all the animals are released into protective care.

The Alberta government has taken action to close the roadside zoo by revoking the facility's license after extensive pressure from Zoocheck Canada and residents of Alberta. While this is a good first step, a number of animals not covered under the zoo permit may be left at this decrepit facility.

Alberta Legislative Members are gauging public interest in the GuZoo Animal Farm by the amount of correspondence they receive on the issue. So please write to the legislative members, urging them to use the full authority of the government and the law to get all the animals out of GuZoo Animal Farm, not just those listed on the controlled species listing in the Alberta Wildlife Act. There is a sample letter and e-mail string at this page.

You do not have to be a Canadian citizen to help the animals at GuZoo. By sending a message, you show the Alberta Legislative Members that the world is watching its handling of this horrendous situation.

IDAEZ 2011 SyracuseInternational Day Of Action For Elephants In Zoos A Huge Success

This year’s International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos (IDAEZ) was an outstanding success, featuring events in 27 cities and a virtual protest using social networking technology to circulate more than 9,000 messages about the suffering and premature deaths of elephants in zoos.

On Saturday, elephant advocates held demonstrations that spanned the globe, from the U.S. to Canada to the UK and Spain, educating thousands of zoo attendees. Media reports on IDAEZ events carried our message to even more people. Scores of colorful banners and posters, and the 30,000 informative flyers that were handed out, opened people’s eyes to the lifetime of misery elephants endure in inadequate zoo displays. Many IDAEZ 2011 Los Angeles ZooIDAEZ events were held at new locations this year, including the Houston Zoo, Fresno Zoo, Honolulu Zoo, Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Birmingham Zoo, Milwaukee Zoo and Ft. Worth Zoo. Click here to see a photo slideshow!

The virtual protest, also held on Saturday, was a great success. This special cyber-demo allowed everyone to participate in IDAEZ by Tweeting zoos and posting enlightening messages on zoos’ Facebook pages about the physical and psychological suffering that Earth’s largest land mammals endure in cramped zoo enclosures. Rather than allow their members to read the truth, at least seven zoos shut down their Facebook pages.

IDA thanks everyone who participated in IDAEZ in person and on-line. You helped educate people around the world about the terrible plight of elephants in zoos, bringing us a step closer to ending their suffering. And we also thank this year’s celebrity supporters, Lily Tomlin, Jorja Fox and Mariana Tosca.

Vegan double taco burgerOur Favorite Summer Vegan Barbeque Recipes

We're in prime BBQ and potluck season and every night people are lighting up their grills. For many of us this is a great opportunity to experiment with a new recipe or, better yet, introduce our friends and family to how delicious and easy it is to be vegan. Food is a great form of outreach for the animals. There are a lot of folks that don't want to hear about the suffering that is inherent to the meat industry but are intrigued by trying out new foods. Bringing a cruelty-free dish to a get together is a non-threatening way to change hearts and minds and can even invite questions on how someone can lead a more compassionate lifestyle. If you're looking for some new recipes for classic favorites, here are some of the best, specially chosen by IDA's Annie Judah-Shannon.
