Hanneford elephant, credit:ARFFTell USDA To Act Immediately For Suffering Elephants In 2 Circuses

For years, the USDA has stood by and watched as elephants are worked to death in circuses: wasted away, crippled by arthritis and foot disease, or traumatized from abusive training and stress. An ongoing refusal to hold exhibitors responsible for violations of the Animal Welfare Act, despite the USDA's charge to enforce the law, has resulted in elephant deaths and threatens lives today.

There are many elephants traveling with circuses who are in dire need of intervention and simply should not be traveling or used for rides or performances, including the Hanneford Circus elephant shown here in Miami (photo credit: ARFF). Click here to read about the Hanneford and Carden elephants and see what you can do to help.

Dogs enjoying water bowls thanks to IDA IndiaIDA India Expands Water Bowl Project To New Cities

Last month we told you about IDA India's Water Bowl Project. To help thousands of thirsty stray dogs, IDA India provides free cement bowls to place near homes and offices, and volunteers keep them filled.

This project was started by IDA India's Sarita Raturi on a small scale last year in Western Mumbai. The dogs were thrilled with the water available to them. More volunteers joined and 220 bowls were installed in Mumbai, 25 bowls in nearby Navi Mumbai, and 20 in Delhi. After we wrote about it in our eNews, many of you contacted Sarita and now, as The Times of India reports, the project is expanding to Pune, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai.

IDA India will give cement bowls to volunteers free of charge and also a pack of quick cement to fix it to the ground. Volunteers keep the bowls clean and filled with fresh water. If you are in India and want to get involved, email Sarita. Thanks for your help! Credit: Linda HayWild Horses - Update On IDA Legal Case Against The BLM

Our lawsuit continues! In Defense of Animals, et al v. U.S. Dept. of the Interior, et al. moves on to our next hearing in Sacramento on March 24. If you're near Sacramento and want to attend, click here for details.

The lawsuit challenges the BLM's approval and implementation of the 2010 Twin Peaks Gather Plan - the round-up and removal of close to 2,000 wild horses and burros from the Twin Peaks HMA in northern California and western Nevada. The lawsuit seeks to set aside this decision for violations of the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act, including the transfer of wild horses to long-term holding facilities in the midwest, and the National Environmental Policy Act, for failure to adequately analyze the impacts of the round-up. Click here to read more! Thanks to our co-plaintiff Linda Hay for the Twin Peaks photos.

MeatoutGo Green For St. Patty's Day - While Kicking The Meat Habit For Meatout!

This year instead of just wearing green and drinking a green beer, why not actually go green? Animal agriculture is responsible for more than half the total human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and numerous other environmental impacts including water waste and pollution, overgrazing, deforestation, loss of habitat and species, and wasted resources and energy. These dramatic problems are manageable and reversible with a global shift to a vegan diet. Eating a plant-based diet is one of the most powerful things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.

It's also time for the annual Meatout and the goal for 2011 is to serve vegan food to 20,000 people in the month of March. Be part of this historic effort and learn more here. IDA is joining forces with FARM to feed 1,300 people vegan Tofurky sandwiches at a peace rally in San Francisco, showing that peace begins on your plate! A vegan diet is your healthy, lucky pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that will help preserve your health and the health of the planet.
