Chile to expand marine reserves Following campaigning by Oceana, the Chilean Government announced plans to expand the Salas y Gómez marine reserve and to create a smaller reserve off the coast of Easter Island. After an expedition in 2010 to Salas y Gómez Island, led by Oceana, National Geographic, and the Waitt Foundation, the Chilean President announced the creation of the original Salas y Gómez marine reserve. Atlantic sea turtles gain protection from scallop dredges Sea turtles in the Atlantic are a little bit safer now, thanks to new fishing regulations. Sea turtles are often accidentally caught and killed in scallop dredges. But there's a new tool that will push sea turtles out of harm's way, and Atlantic fishers are now required to use it when turtles are present.
