Reid Park Zoo elephantsUrge New Tucson Mayor To Stop Separation Of Elephant Friends

Please tell newly elected Tucson, Arizona Mayor Jonathan Rothschild that the world is closely watching how his city cares for elephants Connie and Shaba, whose 30-year bond will soon be shattered if the Reid Park Zoo has its way.

Connie and Shaba have been together since 1982 when Connie was 15 and Shaba was just 2, and they have been deeply bonded ever since. Yet the zoo plans to send Asian elephant Connie to the San Diego Zoo, as she doesn't fit in with the Reid Park Zoo's soon-to-open African elephant exhibit. Though the zoo will try to integrate Shaba with the new group of elephants, there is no guarantee that this will be successful - if not, Shaba would be moved to another zoo. Click here to read more and send an e-mail to the mayor. Arizona Residents: Note new time for Sunday, Dec. 18 rally at the Reid Park Zoo: noon - 2:30 p.m.

Soldier beats sheep in AfghanistanIDA Files Defense Department Complaint Over Sheep Beating

In Defense of Animals has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Defense, requesting an investigation into the brutal beating of a helpless sheep by a U.S. soldier armed with a baseball bat. The incident was caught on video in Afghanistan and circulated around the internet, tarnishing the reputation of the U.S. military. The video shows a child looking on and several other soldiers laughing and cheering the beating. It took 12 blows, with the sheep in convulsions and attempting escape, before the helpless animal finally died. IDA demands that an investigation is conducted into this incident and appropriate action taken for all those involved. Click here to read more and to send a fax to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
