Cole Brothers Circus tigerIDA Gives Cole Bros. Circus Its Worst Year Ever

The Cole Bros. Circus, now wrapping up its 2011 season in Florida, had its worst year ever, thanks to IDA. The circus faced a barrage of federal actions as a result of IDA investigations into a virtually unending series of schemes to circumvent federal animal welfare law, horrific animal abuse, and flagrant endangerment of the public.

IDA applauds the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture for taking critical steps to ensure the Cole Bros. Circus is prosecuted for its violations of federal law. But we will not stop monitoring the circus or filing complaints as long as Cole continues to put children and animals at risk. We will continue to urge the USDA to hold the Cole Bros. Circus responsible for the illegal actions of its hired and often dangerously inexperienced exhibitors, and for any animal welfare and public safety violations.

what you can do:1. IDA could not have achieved these successes without the help of supporters who visited, videotaped and demonstrated at the Cole Bros. Circus! If you'd like to help, please send an email to IDA's Circus Activists Network.

2. Click here to send a message to the USDA, urging the agency to continue to hold the Cole Bros. Circus responsible for repeated AWA violations.

Ask Dr. WilsonDr. Wilson Tackles The "Caveman" Or "Paleolithic" Diet

Dr. Holly Wilson, a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician, answers your vegan health questions every month in IDA's eNews. This month, Dr. Wilson unravels the "Paleolithic Diet." Is eating like a caveman really as healthy as some believe?

Are you thinking about going vegan? Are you curious about a particular vitamin, nutrient, or food? Do you want to get the most nutrition from your plant-based diet? Submit your vegan health question and maybe you'll see it answered in an upcoming IDA eNews.

Vegan pizza takes over the world!World Go Vegan Week Report, Plus We Announce Winner Of Our WGVW Contest!

World Go Vegan Week (Oct. 24 – 31) was a delicious success, with dozens of pizza restaurants offering a vegan pizza for the week featuring Daiya cheese, a vegan cheese that melts, stretches and tastes like traditional dairy-based cheese. IDA volunteers worked hard to get restaurants to participate in our campaign Vegan Pizza Takes Over the World! We had 73 volunteers reach out to 142 pizza restaurants in the U.S. and Canada asking them to participate in our week of celebration of the vegan lifestyle.

To make things even more interesting, we had a contest! Daiya generously offered a month's supply of their delicious vegan cheese to a random participant who was successful in getting a pizza place to offer a vegan pizza. Click here to see who won, and to read more about how folks celebrated World Go Vegan Week.

Hope_Animal_Sanctuary_rescued_dog_eleanorGoodbyes At IDA's Hope Animal Sanctuary

From Doll Stanley's latest post on our Hope Animal Sanctuary blog: "This is about love, loss, and some of the animals we recently had the privilege of rescuing but who didn't make it. It's been a time of genuine sorrow. I know I don't need to tell you how badly we hurt. Compassion is at the heart of all of us at IDA -  staff, volunteers, and supporters. We all are too familiar with the gnawing pain of loss. This morning I walked about in a daze and had to fight to keep alert as I was transferring one of our young dogs to a compatible group. Life moves on, but the memories of the ones who leave us are indelible, imprinted on our minds forever." BLM photoTell Congress To Save $1 Billion By Cutting Wasteful Programs That Hurt Animals

The U.S. Congress has created a "Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction" to come up with a plan by November 23 to reduce our debt by $1.5 trillion over 10 years. Because so much wasteful spending also needlessly harms animals, this gives the animal protection community an extraordinary opportunity to suggest budget cuts. The Humane Society Legislative Fund has suggested reforming four wasteful programs that will save taxpayers more than $1 billion. In Defense of Animals (IDA) endorses this proposal. Please send a fax to the committee and your own Senators and Representative highlighting these probably overlooked opportunities for savings.

The reforms suggested are: 1) End warehousing of chimpanzees in federally-funded laboratories – save $300 million! 2) Eliminate the need to feed thousands of wild horses in government holding pens by using immunocontraception rather than round-ups and removals – save $172 million! 3) Replace animal testing procedures with more efficient methods – save $500 million! 4) Reduce government subsidies of inefficient and inhumane lethal predator control – save $110 million! Click here to send a letter in less than five minutes! Thank you!
