Help Us Build Pressure on the White House to Stop Icelandic Whaling
As part of our campaign to stop Iceland's illegal slaughter of whales, we're ramping up the pressure on the White House to impose sanctions on that nation. Since 2006, Iceland has killed hundreds of whales for profit -- including 280 endangered fin whales -- in defiance of an international moratorium on commercial whaling. So far, BioGems Defenders have sent more than 97,000 messages to President Obama, urging him to impose tough economic sanctions on those Icelandic seafood companies that are directly tied to the whaling industry. Long-time whale activist Pierce Brosnan is leading our fight, lending his voice to a short but compelling video on the unconscionable slaughter of endangered fin whales. You can help us alert millions more Americans and build overwhelming pressure on the White House to take decisive action before more whales are killed.

In the News
BAD NEWS FOR WYOMING'S WOLVES
Polar BearLast month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Wyoming officials reached an agreement over that state's long-disputed wolf management plan, paving the way for Wyoming's almost 350 wolves to be removed from the endangered species list in the near future. The agreement is even worse than the wolf management plans in place for Idaho and Montana, where state officials have declared their intentions to kill hundreds of wolves through public hunts. Wyoming's plan will designate wolves as predators in all areas of the state except for the northwest corner, meaning they can be shot on sight at any time in those designated areas. Stay tuned for more details on how you can help NRDC oppose this disastrous plan.

SHELL GETS GO-AHEAD TO DRILL IN BEAUFORT SEA
The Obama Administration has given the Shell oil company tentative approval to begin drilling next summer in the Beaufort Sea, off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Oil companies have no proven method for cleaning up spills in ice-filled waters, and a spill could be catastrophic for the polar bears, whales, seals and other wildlife that thrive in this pristine Arctic environment. The go-ahead came just days before reports of a massive oil spill in the North Sea, where a leaky pipeline also operated by Shell released more than 55,000 gallons of oil into the icy waters. To date, more than 76,000 BioGems Defenders have sent messages to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in opposition to Shell's plans for drilling in the Beaufort. NRDC will fight on all fronts -- including in court, if necessary -- to stop Shell from drilling.
