Ask Dr. WilsonAsk Dr. Wilson - How Much Protein Do You Really Need?

Every month Dr. Holly Wilson, a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician in Florida, answers your vegan health questions here in IDA's eNews.

This month, Dr. Wilson delves deeper into the protein issue. Many readers have submitted questions and concerns about adequate protein levels and sources in the vegan diet. Dr. Wilson talks about findings recently published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that reveal just how much protein a human really needs - and where to get it in a plant-based diet. Click here to read Dr. Wilson's answer. And send your questions for future columns to hope@idausa.org.

Parma Ohio Guardian Campaign Leader Brandon YanakHow One Young But Active Citizen Changed Parma, Ohio

"One Word Can Make A Difference." That's the headline in the Parma Observer column about Brandon Yanak's successful effort to bring IDA's Guardian Campaign to his community. Brandon's opening statement shows he's wise beyond his years: "Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." The way we speak is a precursor to the way we act." Click here to read more about Brandon's inspiring victory for animals - it just may help you with your own activism.

Percy Shelly, vegetarianGreat Minds Think Alike - Happy Birthday Percy Shelley

Percy Shelley (August 4, 1792 - July 8, 1822) was a Romantic poet, critically regarded as among the finest lyric poets in the English language. Shelley was part of a famous circle including John Keats and Lord Byron, and novelist Mary Shelley was his second wife.

In Prometheus Unbound, Shelley wrote: "I wish no living thing to suffer pain." In Queen Mab he said: "It is only by softening and disguising dead flesh by culinary preparation that it is rendered susceptible of mastication or digestion, and that the sight of its bloody juices and raw horror does not excite intolerable loathing and disgust." Shelley wrote several essays about vegetarianism including "A Vindication of Natural Diet" and "On the Vegetable System of Diet." He was a great friend to animals (though unfortunately not equally kind to some of the people in his life) and a great advocate, especially for animals used in the production of food.
