Take Action to Protect the World's Oceans

Dear Anne,

Oil companies are working day and night to drill in the Belize Barrier Reef – home to dolphins and other marine animals.

Help save dolphins and protect the reef. Donate today»

The air guns oil companies use to find oil send explosive bursts of noise reverberating through the ocean for thousands of miles.

For the dolphins who live in the Belize Barrier Reef, it's an inescapable, overwhelming force - a seemingly endless flood of noise that blocks out the calls of their families, the sounds of potential meals, or the warning signs of danger. Hurt and confused, it can even cause them to beach themselves and die.

Oceana has launched an unprecedented campaign to protect the Belize Barrier Reef from the devastating effect of oil drilling by passing a referendum that would stop offshore drilling in Belize for good. Thousands of Belizeans have joined the fight, but we're up against the big money and influence of oil companies – and we need your help to win.

Help save dolphins and the reef from offshore oil drillingChip in today and help us meet our $30,000 goal by June 27»

Already, oil companies have entered into closed-door negotiations and contracts with the government to buy the rights to explore and drill, even in marine protected areas. We can beat them, but we need to act now to reach enough Belizeans – and have the resources to help them speak up and say no to offshore oil drilling.

Oceana is leading a nationwide political campaign in Belize that will bring the decision back to the people, and help them pass a referendum that would keep the Reef safe for years to come. We're:

  • Canvassing in every one of Belize's six districts through a house-to-house outreach campaign to build support for the referendum;
  • Creating educational documentaries and advertisements on national radio and TV to help educate the public on this critical issue;
  • Developing scientific reports that will document the environmental and economic value of the reef to the survival of Belizeans.

But the oil companies are already dramatically outspending us – they've hired some of the best law firms to represent their interests, and have teams of lobbyists, huge media support and special insider access to the government. Will you help us fight back?

Support our campaign to protect dolphins and one of the world's natural wonders – the Belize Barrier reef.  Donate by June 27.

Thank you for helping us protect our dolphins and barrier reef.
