| | | Dear Anne,
It's impossible to say what Malcolm's life was like before PETA's investigator met him, but what was documented during this senior Chihuahua's final weeks at a self-proclaimed "hospice and rehabilitation center" for "special needs" animals was nothing but misery. Elderly, thin, and lethargic, Malcolm was clearly in need of urgent help when he arrived at Angel's Gate in Delhi, New York. With no veterinary attention for three days after his arrival and no apparent follow-up in the two weeks afterward, Malcolm's condition continued to deteriorate — until he could no longer stand, walk, or eat. When our investigator last saw him on the day before his death, he was severely dehydrated and virtually motionless — devoid of any sense of the "peace, dignity and love" that the facility's founder and executive director, Susan Marino, promises unsuspecting guardians and others who relinquish animals to Angel's Gate. Malcolm's story — and that of countless other animals routinely neglected or abused behind closed doors — would go unheard without the groundbreaking undercover work of PETA's investigations team. Won't you help their lifesaving efforts by making a monthly gift to PETA's Investigations & Rescue Fund right now? Malcolm was just one of hundreds of animals sent to Angel's Gate, undoubtedly with good intentions — intentions that ultimately did not help them. Our investigator's three weeks undercover at the facility led to a 27-page complaint that is currently with the local district attorney. We hope that animals still at Angel's Gate will soon receive the immediate help they need and that the facility's founder will be prosecuted. We continue to do all that we can to seek justice for the animals still at Angel's Gate, and the history of PETA's investigative work gives us hope for a positive outcome.
PETA's undercover investigations have been at the core of many historic victories. From our first investigation of a laboratory that abused primates in Silver Spring, Maryland, more than three decades ago to last year's exposé of a major supplier to the international pet trade — which led to the largest-ever seizure of animals in the United States and a federal arrest warrant for the dealer — our undercover work is changing how corporations, universities, and governments treat animals, and it's saving animal lives. Whether they're uncovering horrors on factory farms and in slaughterhouses, revealing the dirty secrets of the pet trade, documenting the abuse of elephants and other animals in the name of entertainment, or exposing cruelty in laboratories, our brave investigators are often putting their own safety at risk to help animals who would otherwise suffer in silence. The investigators face the internal torment that comes from fighting the urge to intervene in behalf of single animals immediately so that lasting change can be made for scores by bringing the documentation of cruelty to the public, law-enforcement authorities, prosecutors, and regulatory agencies. You can give them the resources that they must have to continue this important work — work that is vital to everything that we do for animals — by becoming a monthly supporter of PETA's Investigations & Rescue Fund today. For all that you do for animals — especially those suffering behind closed doors at facilities like Angel's Gate — thank you.
Kind regards, Ingrid E. Newkirk President
P.S. Malcolm's story would never have been told without the dedication of PETA's undercover investigations team. Please help them do even more for animals by supporting PETA's Investigations & Rescue Fund right now. | | | |
