| World Week For Animals In Laboratories Starts Saturday! April 16 - 24 is World Week for Animals in Laboratories (WWAIL). IDA asks that you please contact the heads of government-funded animal research in both the United States and Canada, asking them to reduce and eliminate the use of animals in experiments. Last week we gave you a sample letter to send to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States. If you haven't yet sent that letter, you can do so by clicking here. This week we ask you to please use this link to send a message to Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) President Alain Beaudet. Ask him to initiate a concrete plan for reducing the number of animals in labs each year. For this year's WWAIL, Canadian activists will be demonstrating at the CIHR headquarters - show your support by sending this e-mail right now! Other dedicated activists are hosting plays and movie screenings, trying to stop construction on a new animal lab, and protesting at research institutions around the world. Check the 2011 WWAIL events page to see what's happening near you. And consider writing a letter to the editor or staging your own event. Pick out a really cute bunny card, write your own personal thoughts about Nordstrom stores selling fur, and mail to: Blake Nordstrom, President, Nordstrom Corporate Offices, 1700 Seventh Avenue, Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98101. And if you have an extra bunny card, send it to Nordstrom Customer Relations at the same address. | | IDA Urges St. Louis Zoo To End Elephant Program Calling the St. Louis Zoo "a breeding ground for suffering," IDA is urging the zoo to end its elephant program following the diagnosis of tuberculosis in the Asian elephant Donna. This zoo has a history of elephant suffering that includes foot disease and arthritis, birth complications, stereotypic behavior, and infectious diseases. Some blame the economy; others say banning horse slaughter in the U.S. meant "owners" who couldn't sell their horses let them starve. I say it's both selfishness and ignorance. Horses are being overbred just like other companion animals. Those who think they can make a buck breed and then find out there are no buyers ... the glut of horses means you can buy a horse for $50, or get one from someone who wants to "unload." It's cool to have a horse and to tell folks you have a horse. Horses are like "trophy brides": they express status ... how many of these people are caught up in a whim with no thought of how to actually care for horses?"
