Dear Anne, Leave the Environment Out of It! Legislative attacks on wolves, clean air and children's health have NO place in a spending bill. Tell Congress to keep the next budget bill clean of anti-environmental riders! Today our thoughts are with the people of Japan, who are bravely coping with a catastrophic earthquake, a devastating tsunami and a rapidly unfolding nuclear crisis. They deserve all the humanitarian assistance the world can provide. But even while our attention is riveted by events in the Far East, Congress is moving ahead with talks on a spending bill -- a bill that could have far-reaching impacts on our own environment. We can't afford to sit on the sidelines. Congress should do its job of passing a budget bill that funds the government -- instead of sneaking through anti-environmental "riders" that have nothing to do with federal spending. Send a message telling your Representatives and Senators to keep it clean! Call on them to stick to their job of funding the government and to keep the budget bill clean of anti-environmental riders. Last week, the Senate proposed a budget with a single rider: an attempt to strip wolves of their endangered species protection and leave them vulnerable to mass slaughter by the states. What does that have to do with funding our government? The House spending bill attacked wolves, too, and got worse from there. It was bristling with industry-sponsored assaults on our right to clean air and clean water ... the government's power to protect wilderness ... and the EPA's authority to control neurotoxins like mercury that are especially dangerous to children. Both of these offensive spending bills were blocked last week, but Congress is about to try again. Please make your voice heard at this critical juncture -- before the next spending bill is proposed and negotiated. Congress has its work cut out just to reach agreement on spending levels and deficit reduction. It should leave wolves out of it -- and steer clear of any and all riders that weaken the EPA and destroy our environment at the bidding of industrial polluters. Don't let Congress turn the budget process into a stealth attack on your natural heritage and your family's health. Tell Congress to keep it clean!
