Dear Anne, There are many threats facing sea turtles today – from scallop dredgers that kill the hundreds of sea turtles who aren't able to out-swim them, to long-line fishing hooks, habitat destruction, and polluted waters. Dangers like these have led every species of turtle in U.S. waters to be threatened with extinction. Better regulations and safer fishing techniques will help protect and restore turtle populations – but it's up to us to fight for them. Join Oceana in the fight to save sea turtles – the deadline is tomorrow! The severe decline of sea turtle populations around the world is directly attributable to human-created threats. Sea turtles are critical to healthy ocean ecosystems, bringing nutrients to beaches and keeping reefs and other sea creatures healthy. That's why Oceana is fighting to protect them by: - Reducing sea turtle by-catch in U.S. fisheries through fishing gear modifications.
- Establishing critical habitat to aid in the recovery of sea turtle species.
- Raising public awareness of the threats facing sea turtles through educational materials and grassroots organizing.
- Lobbying Congress for comprehensive legislation that will conserve, protect and restore sea turtle populations.
Protect threatened and endangered sea turtles – help us reach our $40,000 goal today. Please help us continue our work to make the oceans safer for present and future generations of sea turtles.
