| Oprah And 378 Of Her Staff Go Vegan For A Week Oprah recently challenged her staff to join her and voluntarily go vegan for one week. 378 Harpo Production employees agreed to the challenge and Oprah dedicated an episode of her show to the results, so we had an Oprah watching party! About 75 delighted IDA and PETA employees, supporters, and other vegans packed into Harvey’s Bar in San Francisco to watch Oprah on big screen TVs. Oprah said that she is now “veganish” and will continue to lean in this direction. She is implementing Meat-Free Mondays in the cafeterias at Harpo Productions as well as ensuring that a vegan option is always available. IDA thanks Oprah for bringing veganism to the mainstream, exposing the graphic cruelty of the slaughterhouse, and showing people that there is a healthy and compassionate way to live and eat. In response, IDA-India has begun a new Water Bowl Project. We provide and install free cement bowls to place near homes and offices. This project started on a very small scale last year with the help of a few volunteers who placed 5 bowls in Western Mumbai. The animals were so thrilled with the water available to them that it seemed like a wonderful idea to continue. More volunteers joined and now we already have 220 bowls installed in Mumbai and 25 bowls in nearby Navi Mumbai. Someone in Delhi heard of this and now we have installed 20 bowls in the Noida/Delhi area. If you are in India and want to get involved, email Sarita. Just tell her how many bowls you want, your address and phone number, and Sarita will get back to you within 24 hours. Thanks for your help! | | Will West Hollywood Become The First Fur-free City? California activists have initiated a campaign to make West Hollywood the first fur-free city in the world. As CNN reported, "The city has already banned the declawing of cats, prohibited pet stores from doing business with puppy mills and changed ordinances to call a pet owner a guardian." So we share with you this new Los Angeles Times article with a request that you spread the word. | | Oppose BLM Plan To Remove 1,726 Wild Horses From Northeastern Nevada The Bureau of Land Management is accepting public comments on a plan to round up 1,726 wild horses from the Triple B, Maverick Medicine and Antelope Valley BLM Herd Managment Areas and the Cherry Spring Wild Horse Territory, managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The roundup is scheduled for July 2011, in the heat of the desert summer. They will leave behind as few as 472 wild horses in this vast, 1.7 million-acre public lands complex. Meanwhile, the BLM authorizes nine times that number of privately-held, farmed animals to graze the same area.
