deerBreaking News - Victory! Deer Saved From Cruel Bowhunt In New York!

When IDA learned that Teatown Lake Reservation, the largest non-profit nature preserve in Westchester County, New York was planning a deer bowhunt starting in November, we immediately mobilized our supporters to speak out. And, thanks to your response, we have great news to report. Just this morning we received word that the hunt was cancelled!

Bowhunting is an extremely cruel method for killing deer. For most of the deer, death takes at least several minutes, while they experience intense pain and fear - some stagger away and die days later from infection.

The Teatown victory comes on the heels of IDA's work to oppose a bowhunt in nearby Croton-on-Hudson, which called off their scheduled hunt. This followed a similar victory in another Westchester town: Hastings-on-Hudson cancelled plans to kill deer using the net and bolt method after IDA staff met with the town board about the cruelty of net and bolt, and the availability of immunocontraception to manage deer humanely.

kenneth williams go vegan t shirtWorld Go Vegan Week Begins Sunday

The fifth annual World Go Vegan Week - October 24 through 31 - is an international campaign to promote a vegan diet as a compassionate, sustainable and healthy way of eating and living. Being vegan is getting easier with restaurants across the U.S. offering a variety of vegan options. From pizza places and hot dog stands to upscale bistros, vegan options are popping up everywhere. Dining out has never been easier or more delicious for vegans.

In celebration of World Go Vegan Week, activists and organizations are working with restaurants in their communities to offer vegan options during the week. For example, Mercy For Animals arranged the participation of restaurants in Chicago, New York City, Dallas, and Columbus, Ohio. If you live in one of those cities, check the e-mail we sent you earlier this week for a list of participating restaurants, and be sure to visit one (or more!) for an incredible, cruelty-free lunch or dinner. For more information on World Go Vegan Week and to get involved, contact hope@idausa.org.

BLM photoPlease Send One E-Mail Today To Help Thousands Of Wild Horses

Every decade the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) district offices revise their Resource Management Plans (RMPs) which guide how resources such as water and forage are allocated. At this level long-term plans are made for the administration of the public lands – this is when the usually arbitrary and artificially low “appropriate management levels” are established for wild horses and burros.

Support horses in 20 Herd Management Areas (HMAs) in the Winnemucca District Office’s jurisdiction by commenting on the office’s RMP. The deadline for comments is Monday, October 25, so please don’t delay.

Dead fin whaleWorldwide Anti-Whaling Day, November 5

Please join anti-whaling advocates across the globe on November 5 for Worldwide Anti-Whaling Day. We'll be at Japanese Consulates, Embassies, and other visible locations to increase awareness and inspire action to end the slaughter of whales. Click here for a list of events. If there's no event listed in your area but you'd still like to help, contact Melissa@idausa.org.

Several countries including Japan, Norway, and Iceland continue to hunt whales. Hundreds of years of hunting has devastated whale populations worldwide. Despite a 1986 moratorium on commercial whaling, many species remain in danger of extinction.

IDA continues to educate and rally the public to increase support for protection of whales and their habitats worldwide. IDA is a member of the North American Ocean Noise Coalition, the California Gray Whale Coalition, and the Whales Need Us Coalition.
