July 27, 2010 Prairie Dogs Find Much-Needed Champions Dear Anne, Prairie dogs die slowly -- over hours or days -- when poisoned to clear land for cattle grazing. Charming and social, prairie dogs sustain nine wildlife species, including the endangered black-footed ferret, in grassland ecosystems. They don’t deserve this agonizing death. I just kicked off a complex project in Wyoming to save prairie dogs. This team effort with the U.S. Forest Service and other wildlife groups will humanely move hundreds of these adorable creatures from a poisoning zone to a protected grassland. Please get to know this fascinating species through this slideshow and story. I'll update you soon -- with more pictures -- on our progress in saving prairie dogs.
