Lily Tomlin Wants YOU To Participate In IDA's International Day Of Action For Elephants In Zoos IDA is pleased to have Lily Tomlin again support the biggest event of the year for elephants. The accommplished actor and passionate activist for elephants has issued this call to action: "It's time to stop keeping elephants in zoos, where they are suffering and dying prematurely purely as a result of their captivity in small and unnatural displays. That's why I’m urging everyone to get involved in the International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos on June 19, a unique outreach event that brings the world together to stop the suffering." Click here to read more and see how you can get involved. Update On Our Fight To End The Horrors Of Vivisection IDA's President, Dr. Elliot Katz, offers his thoughts on our anti-vivisection campaign. Read about three of our current projects: fighting proposed radiation experiments on squirrel monkeys; ending chimpanzee experimentation once and for all through passage of the Great Ape Protection Act; and exposing the cruelty and senselessness of animal experimentation. Act Today To Oppose Roundup Of 2,000 Horses And Burros In California Earlier this week, a federal judge dismissed our lawsuit, on a technicality, to stop the roundup and long-term holding of 2,000 horses from the Calico Mountain Complex in Nevada. We are more committed than ever to continue to fight this injustice against American wild horses and burros. Please stick with us through this long battle – we must continue to submit public comments against each and every roundup, and urge Congress to change the broken system that has for decades wrongly taken freedom and family away from innocent wild horses and burros. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently issued its formal proposal to roundup 2,000 wild horses and burros in the Twin Peaks Herd Management Area in California. The BLM says this nearly 800,000-acre area can only have 448-758 horses and 72-116 burros; the BLM plans to remove 1,855 wild horses and 210 burros. Thousands of you commented earlier this year, opposing this ill-conceived plan and we must again document our opposition. We must not give up until wild horses and burros are protected from these horrible roundups. In an extensive and inspiring seven-page insert, both the City NewsHound and the Journal News featured a number of articles focusing on the value and significance of the term "guardian" over "owner". IDA's Guardian Campaign seeks to elevate animals above the status of mere property, objects, commodities or things in our language and our actions. And the media is taking note! Every day we see ads for buckets of chicken that can feed a family of four for $10 and fast food dollar menus featuring bacon topped with cheese. Contrast that with dried beans and lentils at less than $1 a pound and rice well below $1 per pound. Even tofu, the chicken of the vegetarian world, is usually well under $2 a pound." Over time these smaller grocery bills add up to a much healthier bank account and a healthier you. Switching to a plant-based diet can also shrink your doctor bills. It's difficult to calculate exactly how much money you can save by avoiding the numerous chronic illnesses connected to a meat-based diet. But minimizing your risk for bypass surgeries, diabetes and obesity can only be a good thing.
