Dear Anne,   Mona Lisa, rescued in July, has fully recovered thanks to your support. Like most In Defense of Animals’ supporters, you probably share your home with a companion animal. Nationwide, 110 million dogs and cats live as family members with guardians who love them. But here are a few frightening statistics you may not know: •    Each year as many as 100,000 dogs are taken from their guardians – and end up in puppy mills, dogfighting rings and biomedical research laboratories. •    More than one million puppies are bred each year in as many as 15,000 puppy mills across the country – one within 20 miles of each American household. •    There are as many as 40,000 dogfighters in the United States. •    During Hurricane Katrina 600,000 companion animals were killed or left without shelter. In my 20-year career in animal protection it has been my great honor to lead the rescue of thousands of dogs from puppy mills. And I consider it a privilege to have helped rescue many more from laboratories, dogfighters, and catastrophic natural disasters. Unfortunately our work – in all of these areas – is still needed, now more than ever. The good news is that In Defense of Animals is positioned and ready to make a difference. Here is a sample of the hands-on work your support made possible just this summer: In July, we helped rescue 133 beagles and 55 macaque monkeys from a toxicology lab. We were asked by law enforcement to help rescue dogs from several very dire situations…  At the residence of a suspected dogfighter, we found critically emaciated dogs barely clinging to life, on chains so tight they needed to be cut off their necks, and so starved and dehydrated they could barely stand, some with fresh wounds and all with visible scars. All immediately relaxed, curled up and accepted help once the chain was cut. How quickly they forgave once the chains came off! In Defense of Animals’ work for companion animals goes on every day. When the earthquake struck Haiti, IDA worked on the ground to rescue companion animals. And earlier this year IDA helped rescue and relocate nearly 100 dogs from a hoarder. With your continued support this is exactly what we will continue to do. You (and the animals) can count on it. So I’m asking for your help today so, together, we can continue to relieve suffering. Funds are needed for our undercover investigatory work, for surveillance equipment, and to support the activities of our hands-on rescue teams – and for animal transport, veterinary care, food and shelter. Of course, there are also substantial costs associated with our campaign to educate the public about the statistics I mentioned at the beginning of this letter. Our IDA team is formidable, and we will stop at nothing in our quest to end the suffering of animals in need. But we can’t win this battle alone. Please, continue to support our work.
